Tim Kelly, a proud member of the Class of 1986, earned Nine Varsity Letters playing three sports throughout his Bishop McDevitt career. These included Three Varsity Letters for Football, Two Varsity Letters for Basketball, and Four Varsity Letters for Golf. In addition, he also served on the Student Council.
Tim earned Honorable Mention All Catholic as a Defensive Back in his Senior year after starting the entire season on Special Teams during his Sophomore Year, then starting Defensive Back/Free Safety in both his Junior and Senior Years. He recorded 15 interceptions across his Junior (7)/Senior (8) years while being a key member of the highly successful Football Program, coached by Pat Manzi.
Tim was named as a Co-Captain during his Senior Year of Basketball, coached by Joe Sette. He had significant playing time during his Junior Year and started as a Point Guard/Shooting Guard his Senior Year. Unfortunately, his Senior Year was cut short after suffering a serious high-ankle sprain in the first game of the season. Although injured, Tim was still able to contribute to his team by utilizing his jump shot marksmanship to attempt late quarter and late game buzzer beaters. He actually hit 3 last second, game-winning buzzer beaters toward the end of his Senior season, one being a four-overtime victory over Germantown Academy. Despite missing most of the year, Tim was offered a scholarship for Basketball from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.
Tim was named Co-Team Captain with Brian O’Neill in both his Junior and Senior Golf Seasons, coached by Sue Reilly. He owns the distinction as being the only Golfer in McDevitt history to earn All Catholic Honors in each of his four years. At the time, he was one of the only competitors to achieve Four Years All Catholic in Philadelphia Catholic League Golf History. During his time as a Lancer Golfer, the team finished with one regular season title, one second place regular season title and two third place regular season titles. In the PCL Championships, he led the team to 2 second place finishes and one third place finish. In 1985, McDevitt’s golf team recorded the lowest team score in the PCL Championships but because of the incredibly high caliber players from all HS that year, the team finished 3rd overall in the PCL. Being a proud Caddie from Huntington Valley Country Club, he and his fellow Caddies (basically THE MCD Golf Team) finished in the top 3 teams in four consecutive Catholic League Golf Championships.
Following High School, Tim earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Temple University in 1990. He then went on to a successful 33-year Career in Software Sales, working for notable companies such as Lucent Technologies, AVAYA, IBM and Qlik. Retiring in 2022, Tim now has an office on the golf course, working as a Professional Caddie at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
Tim married Mimi Howald in 1995, a graduate of Abington High School and Temple University (yes, and God-forbid, he married a “Public”—Tim’s words, not mine). They settled in Glenside where they proudly raised their family in St. Luke’s Parrish. Their family includes 3 handsome young men, Timmy, Danny and Matt, as well as their beautiful daughter Mary.
Please join me in honoring and welcoming Tim “Imper” Kelly, Bishop McDevitt Class of 1986, to the Bishop McDevitt High School Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame.
